Grimace: Q&A

Grimace has been making waves with his distinctive style in dubstep production. Following up the inclusion of ‘Slew Dem’ (title track of Inna Riddim Records first release) on the Ministry of Sound compliation Sound of Dubstep, he’s also featured on the Sony / OneLove mix CD Dubstep Invasion (out now on iTunes and in your local CD shop), with ‘Away From Me’, one of the tracks on the forthcoming Panoramic EP (Inna Riddim Recs). We caught up with Grimace for a quick question and answer sesh.

Q: In the last 12 months, tracks by you have been featured on three major-label compilations. How do you feel about that?

A:  It’s amazing!  Much more than I ever thought possible to be honest.  I’ve been fortunate enough to have my last 3 tunes that were released all featured on major-label compilations. I’ve had fantastic support from the guys at Inna Riddim and also the boys over at Dubrave and without them it wouldn’t have happened.  Also have to thank Kid Kenobi, Will Styles and the Glovecats for putting my tunes on their mixes.

Q:Where do you see yourself heading music-wise? Would you consider branching out from dubstep?

Yeah for sure.  I actually wrote drum and bass for years before getting into dubstep and got into it kind of by mistake really.  I took a break one day from dnb on a Saturday and decided to mix things up and write a bit of dubstep, which was the first time in years I wrote anything outside of 175 bpm.

I found the change in tempo very refreshing, and the first dubstep tune I ever wrote was ‘Newtown Badboy’ which was picked up on Filthy Digital recordings out of America.

The name of the tune was a bit of an inside joke.  Anyone that knows me knows I’m not much of a ‘bad boy’

I’d love to write some other styles of bass music in the future.

Q: What plans do you have for the near future – anything cooking up in the studio?

My plans are just to keep writing music.  I love doing it.  Always plenty of stuff being worked on,  one problem I have is I tend to have a short attention span and as a result I end up with a lot of half finished tunes! I’m revisiting a lot of them now and finishing them off, as well as working on some new tunes currently, so plenty coming soon!

Q: Any thoughts on dubstep scene right now?

It’s still a young genre and I’m sure it will continue to evolve, but I am surprised at how big it has become over the past few years.  I like all different styles of dubstep, for me I love both the dance floor jump up stuff as well as the deeper stuff.  I’m not really into some of the really noisy stuff which kind of sounds like someone just screaming into your ear drum, but I really think there’s something for everyone at the moment.
